Infrastructure as Code has been a familiar concept for over 20 years, but in the last couple of years the need for it has increased considerably. According to Wouter van der Linde, an experienced Java developer at Capgemini, this has everything to do with the ever-growing popularity of cloud providers such as Amazon, Microsoft and Google. It is therefore to be expected that developers and programmers will have to deal with configuring infrastructure in this way in the near future. To prepare fellow programmers for what is about to come, Wouter will give a presentation during the .BLD() Tech Talk on September 8th, 2020 in which he will introduce you to the many advantages and solutions that Infrastructure as Code has to offer.
Automate, accelerate, improve
In practice, it is increasingly about automating processes. "In my team, we try to automate the way we build and test software as much as possible. This is important for our customers. The sooner we can bring certain features towards our clients, the sooner they will benefit from them. With Infrastructure as Code we take the next step in the automation process".
Infrastructure as Code, the new standard
There is no company that will avoid saving costs, when they can do so in a simple manner. This is precisely why Wouter is convinced that Infrastructure as Code is the future. "This will become the norm within now and a few years. For companies, it saves costs if infrastructure can be set up and dismantled quickly and easily. This method contributes to that tremendously. Not me nor any of my colleagues feel like manually configuring a server several times a day. By using code, that’s not necessary anymore". In order to be well prepared for these upcoming changes, it is advisable for every programmer to get acquainted with this theme.
Demo Amazon Cloud Formation & EKS
During this evening we will not only give the presentation but also provide you with a short demo. We will show you how you can quickly set up a test environment for your developers using Infrastructure as Code. We will use Amazon CloudFormation and Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) to show two ways of applying this method.
"This is not a new way of working but I haven't come across it often enough. Infrastructure as code exists for over 20 years already. The reason for it to be a hot topic at the moment has everything to do with cloud providers like Microsoft, Google and Amazon. Take Amazon for example: they offer many services that are automatically controlled, but the servers will have to be configured. A set of configuration files is all you need to get started quickly. You will only have to run a script, which ensures you to have a workable server within minutes. Customers who want to switch to a cloud provider, often make us realize that information on this topic is underexposed. It is becoming increasingly important to be able to respond to the need for reliability and speed when switching to a cloud provider. We need to be able to advise on this today. That is how we make a difference.”
